Questions to Ask Before Starting Clear Aligners
Clear aligners can be a convenient option for some people, but they are not a shortcut around a dental evaluation. Before you commit, ask what is possible for your teeth and bite, what the plan requires from you, and how the result will be maintained. The answers should be specific to your mouth, not a generic promise.
Am I a good candidate?
Ask what the exam and images show about your teeth, gums, and bite. Untreated dental or gum concerns may need attention first. Some movements are straightforward; others are more complex or may be better managed with a different orthodontic approach or a referral.
What will daily wear involve?
Ask how many hours a day the aligners should be worn, when to remove them, how to clean them, and what happens if you miss wear time. Also ask whether attachments or other aids may be needed. A plan only works if it fits real life and is followed consistently.
How will we check progress?
Discuss visit frequency, expected refinements, and what would trigger a change of plan. Ask how long treatment is estimated to take, while remembering that estimates can change with individual response. Finally, ask about retainers. Teeth can shift after active treatment, so retention is part of the conversation from the start.
Quick answers
Are aligners right for every bite? No. Candidacy needs an in-person assessment.
Is the timeline guaranteed? No; it is an estimate.
Will I need a retainer afterward? Retention is generally part of orthodontic care; ask for your specific plan.
